Ganz schön feist - Aphrodisiakum

ACHTUNG! This song is (PG) for some questionable content (ie. putting an aphrodisiac in someone's food and getting them drunk without explicit consent)

Title: Aphrodisiakum
Artist: Ganz schön Feist
Album: Aphrodisiakum
Year: 2007

Leading up to Valentine's Day, I thought I'd talk about some songs with a distinct "LOVE" theme (not hard; there are a LOT of songs about LOVE), thereby proving that German can sound lovely too.

The protagonist has invited his crush/date over to his house for the perfect romantic evening. He gives her an aphrodisiac and lots of wine to get her "in the mood," but the plan backfires. I'm happy that it backfires because I suspect that his crush/date did not agree to the plan, the plan that dangerously borders on date rape. I don't mean to spoil the atmosphere; it's meant to be a funny song, and it still is, but we should all just be clear that the protagonist's questionable behavior is the sort of thing that belongs in a silly song and not in real life.

Deutsch
“Aphrodisiakum”
English
“Aphrodisiac”
Strophe 1:
du bist schöner als die Sonne
schöner als der Mond
ich hätte schon seit Jahren..
*1 ..dir so gerne beigewohnt
aber heute Abend
kriege ich dich rum
*2 ich tue dir in dein Essen..
..ein Aphrosiakum

ich habe alles arrangiert
bei Kerzenlicht und Wein
sinnlich und romantisch..
..soll dieser Abend sein

Refrain 1:
*3 heute Abend ist es soweit
heute beginnt die Zeit der Zärtlichkeit
heute Abend wird es geschehen
und ich weiß
es wird so wunderschön

Strophe 2:
wir reden über vieles
und die Zeit vergeht im Flug
gegessen hat du mittlerweile..
..auch^ mehr als genug
alles läuft wie im Schnürchen
und ich freue mich schon^
auf die Wirkung vom Aphrodisiakum
von dem Wein, den ich nachmittags
für uns schon^ dekantierte
trinkst du ein Glas nach dem andern
mittlerweile schon das vierte
französischer Chanson
läuft aus den Boxen
als du dich erhebst und sagst:
"ich muss mal^ kotzen"
egal

(Refrain 1)

Bridge:
du gehst in mein Badezimmer
machst dich etwas frisch
ich beseitige inzwischen
das Erbrochene vom Tisch

puste ein paar Kerzen aus
und du kommst aus dem Bad
*4 ich gucke wie ein Auto
denn du bist splitternackt

*2 dann steckst du mir einfach
deine Zunge in den Hals
und ich würde sagen
du bist gleich in meinem Magen

*2 zerreißt mir dann mein Oberhemd
*2 zerkratzt mir meinen Rücken
und überhaupt nicht sinnlich
schreist du mich an:
"los, nimm mich!"

Refrain 2:

heute Abend ist es soweit
heute bin ich kompromissbereit
Zärtlichkeiten sind zwar..
auch^ ganz schön
aber heute wird's auch..
..ohne gehen

beim nächsten Mal
tue ich weniger rein
und du kriegst von mir..
..überhaupt keinen Wein
beim nächsten Mal
ist es wirklich soweit
dann beginnt die Zeit der Zärtlichkeit
Verse 1:
you’re prettier than the sun
prettier than the moon
For years now I’ve wanted..
..to [biblically] know you
but tonight
I’m going to get you
I’ll put an aphrodisiac..
..in your food

I’ve arranged everything
with candlelight and wine
sensual and romantic..
..[that’s how] this evening shall be

Chorus 1:
tonight’s the night
today tender time will begin *5
tonight it’s going to happen
and I know
it will be so beautiful

Verse 2:
we talk about lots
and time flies by
by now you’ve eaten..
..more than enough
everything’s going perfectly
and I’m looking forward..
..to the effect of the aphrodisiac
from the wine, that I poured..
..for us this afternoon
you drink glass after glass
by now it’s already the fourth
French chanson
plays from the speakers
as you stand up and say:
"I have to throw up"
whatever

(Chorus 1)

Bridge:
you go in my bathroom
[and] freshen up a bit
meanwhile I remove
the vomit from the table

blow out a few candles
and you come out of the bathroom
I gawk like an idiot
‘cause you’re butt naked

then you just stick your tongue..
..down my throat
and I’d say
you’re almost in my stomach

then you rip my shirt
and scratch up my back
and completely unsensually
you yell at me:
"come on, take me!"

Chorus 2:

tonight’s the night
today I’m ready to compromise
tender gestures might..
..be quite nice
but today it’ll also be fine..
..without them

next time
I’ll put in less
and you won’t get..
..any wine at all from me
next time
it’ll really be time
then tender time will begin *5

*1
“beiwohnen” = attend, be present
=means here= archaic term for having sexual intercourse

*2
GRAMMAR:
Sometimes the pronouns “dir” or “mir” (indirect object pronouns) are used in ways that seem redundant

“Ich tue dir in dein Essen ein Aphrodisiakum” =literally+=
“I put [for you] in your food an aphrodisiac”

These pronouns are often used with body parts.
“Dann steckst du mir einfach deine Zunge in den Hals” =literally+=
Then you put [to me] simply your tongue in the throat”

The "mir" is essential here because otherwise you would just hear "the throat" and you wouldn't know whose. In German it's very common to use the word "the" instead of "my", "your", etc. when referring to one's own body parts.

*3
heute Abend ist es soweit =literally= this evening it is time

*4
IDIOM: "ich gucke wie ein Auto"
= "deer in the headlights"
=literally= "I look like a car"
Think about the headlights of a car and this will make sense

*5
Zeit der Zärtlichkeit = "tender time"
Sounds really cheesy, doesn't it? Mark my words: if this blog goes big, this will be one of the catch-phrases on a T-Shirt design in the merchandise shop.

Maybebop - Kuscheln, Sex und Händchenhalten

ACHTUNG! This song is (PG) for some sexual content (ie. it contains the word "sex"). The video is also (PG) for some sorta-naked people in a bed. It's tastefully and artfully done, though.

Title: Kuscheln, Sex und Händchenhalten
Artist: Maybebop
Album: Extrem nah dran
Year: 2011

Leading up to Valentine's Day, I thought I'd talk about some songs with a distinct "LOVE" theme (not hard; there are a LOT of songs about LOVE), thereby proving that German can sound lovely too.

The protagonist explores some theories about the meaning of life, from philosophers to pop-culture characters, but comes to the conclusion that it's really just about love (and related activities). No matter how many times I hear this song, it always hits me makes me feel like I'm realizing for the first time, "Yeah. It really is just about love."

Deutsch
"Kuscheln, Sex und Händchenhalten"
English
"Cuddling, sex and holding hands"
Strophe 1:
seit Menschen auf der Welt sind
stellen sie Fragen..
..nach dem Sinn
Descartes zum Beispiel meinte
dass “ich, weil ich denke, bin”
für Plato war’s entscheidend
dass man stets nur Gutes tut
für Kierkegaard war Müßiggang
das höchste Gut

Strophe 2:
für Nietzsche ist lebendig..
..wer die Macht erlangen will
und für die Show alleine
lebte einst Rudi Carrell
für Gandhi war das Leben
ein Verzichten auf Besitz
und für Camus war's nur
ein gut erzählter Witz

Prechorus 1:
doch wie man’s wendet
oder wie man’s dreht
im Grunde ist es simpel
worum’s geht

Refrain 1:
es geht um Kuscheln,
Sex und Händchenhalten
um Schmusen und um Stöhnen
um Streiten über Kleinigkeiten
und sich dann wieder versöhnen
es geht um Einsamkeit
und Sehnsucht-haben
und Sich beim anderen wärmen;
des Lebens Plan ist
schlicht und einfach
dass wir uns vermehr'n

Strophe 3:
für Kant hat unser Dasein
in sich selbst den höchsten Zweck.
*1 für Donald Duck ist Leben
wie ein ungedeckter Scheck
für Trappatoni dreht sich
alles Leben um den Ball
und für Marx dreht es sich
nur ums Kapital

Strophe 4:
Sokrates, der wusste
dass er überhaupt nichts weiß
und Simba und Mufasa
sehen das Leben als 'nen Kreis
Rousseau erkannte richtig
wer in Tugend lebt hat's schwer
und so kommen wir
unserm Dasein langsam näher

Prechorus 2:
denn alles ist so
wunderbar profan
vielleicht kapiert's bald..
*2 ..selbst der Vatikan

(Refrain 1)

Bridge:
auch wenn einige
das nicht so gerne hören
*3 der Mensch ist eitel
und er will sich wichtig fühlen
er lebt für Leistung
für Karriere und Konsum
*4 damit verdrängt er
denn das
scheint ihn aufzuwühlen:
er ist nur hier
um bald in Ewigkeit zu ruhen

Refrain 2:
es geht um Kuscheln,
Sex und Händchenhalten
um Schmusen und Verführen
um Sich-im-anderen-finden
und Im-anderen-verlieren
wir können noch^ so klug..
*5 ..dagegen reden
und noch^ so aufbegehren
es ändert nichts
das Leben will nur
dass wir uns vermehren
und viel mehr..
..will uns das Leben gar nicht lehren
Verse 1:
ever since ppl have been in the world
they’ve been asking questions..
..about the meaning [of life]
Descarte, for example said,
that “I, because I think, am.”
for Plato, it was critical
that one always did only good
for Kierkegaard, idleness was
the greatest good

Verse 2:
for Nitzsche, he who wants..
..to gain power is [truly] alive
and Rudi Carrell once lived..
..for the show alone
for Gandhi, life was
forgoing possessions
and for Camus it was just
a well-told joke

Pre-Chorus 1:
but no matter how you spin it
or twist it
in the end it’s simple,
what it’s about

Chorus 1:
it’s about cuddling,
sex and holding hands
about smooching and moaning
about arguing over little things
and then making up
it’s about lonliness
and having desire
and warming up with others
life’s plan is
plain and simply
that we multiply

Verse 3:
for Kant our existence itself
..was the highest purpose
for Donald Duck life is
like a bounced check
for Trappatoni, everything
..[in] life revolves around the ball
and for Marx it revolves
around capital *6

Verse 4:
Socrates, he knew
that he knew absolutely nothing
and Simba and Mufasa
see the life as a circle
Rousseau recognized correctly
who lives with integrity has it hard
and with that we’re starting to
come closer to our existence

Pre-Chorus 2:
because everything is so
wonderfully profound
maybe even the Vatican..
..will soon get it

(Chorus 1)

Bridge:
even though some
don’t like hearing this:
humans are vain
and want to feel important
they live for performance
for careers and consumption
they [use all that] to surpress
because this [fact]..
..seems to stir their soul:
they’re just here
so they can soon rest forever

Chorus 2:
it’s about cuddling,
sex and holding hands
about smooching and seducing
about finding yourself in others
and losing yourself in others
we can intelligently
argue against it
and protest
that won’t change anything
life just wants
us to multiply
and life doesn’t want..
..to teach us anything more

REFERENCE: "für Donald Duck ist Leben wie ein ungedeckter Scheck"
You can figure out all of the other references through Wikipedia, but to understand what Donald Duck has to do with a bounced check, you need to understand how must Germans know Donald Duck.
In the USA, we know Donald as a supporting Disney character behind superstar Mickey Mouse. In Europe, however, Donald is himself a superstar, thanks to the unbelievably popular comic series “Lustige Taschenbücher,” (EN = “Donald Duck pocket books”) which focus mainly on the world of Donald Duck, his rich uncle Scrooge and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. A repeating gag throughout the series is that Donald Duck has to do all of Scrooge’s grunt work and rarely gets anything out of it. I think that’s what this line is referring to.

*2

I feel like the Vatican gets referenced a lot in witty German pop music (mostly ironically, as a place of overly strict morals)

*3

der Mensch ist eitel =literally= “the human is vain”
I could have also translated this as “man is vain,” instead of “humans are vain”

*4

damit verdrängt er =literally= “with that he supresses”
The “that” here refers to all the stuff just listed

*5

"dagegen reden" =literally= “speak against it”

*6

Unintentional rhyme in the translation = +2 poetic points (only 2 points because both words are pronounced basically the same in English and in German)
