Juli - Wir beide

Title: Wir beide
Artist: Juli
Album: Ein neuer Tag (also as single)
Year: 2006

A song that you could just as well sing to your best friend as your boyfriend/girlfriend/partner.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHT: The blonde singer on the right is the current singer of Juli, Eva Briegel, but I'm not sure who the brunette on the left is. Supposedly it's her best friend, but so far I haven't found the answer, even with the power of the internet. Let me know if you know!

Deutsch
English
Strophe 1:
weißt du eigentlich^
was du bist für mich?
alles andre als normal
und jederzeit loyal, royal

du bist mein Fundament
keine, die mich so gut kennt
keine, die mich sieht wie du
*1 Old Shatterhand...
...und ich Winnetou

Refrain:
immer werden wir so bleiben
jung und frei und schön
wir beiden stehen auf der guten Seite
Jahr für Jahr
immer werden wir so bleiben
lachen über schlechte Zeiten
deine Schmerzen sind auch meine
Jahr für Jahr

Strophe 2:
weißt du eigentlich^
was du tust für mich
wenn du meine Lasten trägst und
dich mit meinen Feinden schlägst?

ich vertraue dir mehr als mir
*2 und ich liebe dich dafür...
...dass du bist wie du bist
...dass du niemals vergisst
was das Wichtige ist

wir beide...

(Refrain)
Verse 1:
do you know
what you are for me?
everything but normal
and always loyal, royal

you’re my foundation
[there’s] no one, that knows me so well
[there’s] no one, that sees me like you
[you'r] Old Shatterhand...
...and I'm Winnetou

Chorus:
we’ll always stay like this
young and free and beautiful
we both stand on the good side
year after year
we’ll always stay like this
laughing about bad times
your pains are also mine
year after year

Verse 2:
do you know
what you do for me
when you carry my burdens and
battle against my enemies?

I trust you more than myself
And I love you because...
...you are as you are...
...[and] you never forget
what’s most important

The two of us...

(Chorus)

**1
REFERENCE: "Old Shatterhand...und ich Winnetou"
A fictional wild west duo that appears in wild-west novels by Karl May, but is perhaps best known for appearing in the hit German film, “Schuh des Manitu.” The film is a silly satire of wild-west movies and my German friends couldn't believe that I hadn't seen it (I have now. I liked it). I don't know if there are English subtitles for the whole movie, but here's an scene on Youtube with subtitles.

**2

ich liebe dich dafür =literally= “I love you for that.”
The “that” in "for that" refers to the next two lines, which are:
"dass du bist wie du bist" =literally= “that you are as you are” and
"dass du niemals vergisst" =literally= “that you never forget.”
This whole formulation sounds totally normal in German. The only way to make it elegant in English is to rewrite it with the word “because."

Cro - Bye Bye

Title: Bye Bye
Artist: Cro
Album: MTV Unplugged
Year: 2015

Ever wonder if that cute guy/girl you saw briefly on the train/bus/sidewalk could be the love of your life? Cro, the King of Raop, has an answer for you.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHT: a rap/pop artist being accompanied by violins. You don't see that every day.

Deutsch
"Bye Bye"
English
"Bye bye"
Strophe 1:
es ist ein unglaublich schöner Tag
und draußen ist es warm
er ist auf dem Weg nach Hause
mit der Bahn
schaut aus dem Fenster
lässt Gedanken freien Lauf
lehnt sich ganz entspannt zurück
denn er muss lange noch nicht raus
‘n paar Menschen steigen ein..
..andere wieder aus
er wechselt grad das Lied und
plötzlich stand da diese Frau
und er dachte sich "Wow"
sagte: "Klar, der Platz ist frei"
sie lachte und er dachte sich nur

Prechorus 1:
bitte komm, sprich sie an
das ist das Schönste,
was du je gesehen hast
und sie hat sicherlich keinen Mann
stell dich nicht so an
wenn nicht jetzt, wann (dann)?
doch alles, was man hört
ist mein Herzschlag

Hook:
was soll ich nur^ sagen?
irgendwas knockt mich aus
ich bin ein Versager
wenn ich mich doch^ nicht trau
mein Kopf ist voller Wörter
doch es kommt nichts raus
und sie steht auf, steigt aus und sagt
bye bye, bye bye
meine Liebe des Lebens
und ja, wir beide
werden uns nie wieder sehen
kann schon^ sein
*1 dass man sich im Leben..
..2-mal begegnet
doch es beim zweiten Mal
dann einfach zu spät ist

Strophe 2:
*2 es ist ein unglaublich schöner Tag
und draußen ist es warm
sie hat Bock auf Shopping
*3 also in die Stadt
sie braucht so Sachen
die Frauen halt^ eben^ brauchen
'nen Bikini, 'ne neue Tasche
und außerdem will sie schauen
*3 also los, ab in die Bahn
sie zieht sich 'nen Ticket
*4 vier Siebzig für die Fahrt
ist ja^ ganz schön hart
doch dann sieht sie diesen Typ (Typ)
findet ihn süß
*5 setzt sich extra zu ihm hin
und denkt sich

Prechorus 2:
bitte, bitte, bitte, bitte komm
sprich mich an
es ist ganz egal
was du jetzt sagen würdest
*6 ich spring darauf an
also komm (komm)
du bist mein Mann (Mann)
wir gehören zusammen ('sammen)
wenn nicht jetzt, wann? (dann)
ich hör mein Herz

[Hook]

Wenn es beim zweiten Mal
dann einfach zu spät ist
Was soll ich tun
wenn es beim zweiten Mal
dann einfach zu spät ist?
Verse 1:
it's an incredibly beautiful day
and it's warm outside
he's on his way home
with the train
looks out the window,
lets {his} thoughts run free
he leans back, totally relaxed
‘cuz he doesn't have to get off for awhile
a few people get on
...and others get off
he’s changing the song and
suddenly this woman's standing there
and he thought to himself "Wow"
said "Sure, the spot's free."
sie laughed and all he could think was

Pre-Chorus 1:
please c’mon, talk to her
she's the prettiest thing
you've ever seen
and she definitely doesn't have a guy
don't be like that
if not now, then when? (then)
but all that can be heard
is my heartbeat

Hook:
what should I say?
something's knocking me out *7
I'm a failure
if I chicken out *7
my head is full of words
but nothing comes out
she stands up, gets off and says
bye bye, bye bye,
the love of my life
and yeah, the two of us
will never see each other again
maybe it's true
that people meet each other..
..twice in life
but by the second time
it's just too late

Verse 2:
it's an incredibly beautiful day
and it's warm outside
she feels like shopping,
so it's off to the city
she needs a few things,
that women just kinda^ need
a bikini, a new bag
and also just to look around
so here we go, get on the train
she grabs a ticket
4.70 for the ride
that's pretty rough
but then she sees this guy (guy)
thinks he's cute
goes out of her way to sit next to him
and thinks

Pre-Chorus 2:
please, please, please, please, c’mon
talk to me
it doesn't matter
what you'd say right now
I'll go with it
so come on (come on)
you're my man (man)
we belong together ('gether)
If not now, then when? (then)
I hear my heart

[Hook]

If by the second time,
it's just too late
What should I do
if by the second time
it's just too late?

*1
REFERENCE: "das man sich im Leben zweimal begegnet"
Original German Proverb: "man sieht sich (immer) zweimal im Leben" =
= "people (always) see each other twice in life"
It's usually said when people are saying goodbye to each other that haven't had very much time together. It expresses the hope that those people will see each other again.
MIGHT HEAR IT WHEN: your German friends are saying goodbye to you at the end of your study abroad semester in Germany.

*2

TWO incredibly beautiful days in ONE song. That's a German record (there's a stereotype that Germans like complaining about the weather).

*3
"also in die Stadt" =literally= "so into the city"
"ab in die Bahn" =literally= "off into the train"

*4

I was curious if this number was made up, so I decided to search for popular train tickets in German cities that cost 4,70. The first hit was the Day Ticket for the innermost two zones (A+B) in Berlin's S-Bahn. This costs 4,70 with the reduced fare. It makes sense that this scene would take place in Berlin because the city seems to often be the setting for hip rap songs (even though Cro himself has stated he prefers to not live in Berlin). If this is true, it means that the girl in the song can't be older than 14 because the reduced fare is only for children between 6 and 14. This is strange, because the things she's buying are referred to as things that women need ("die Frauen halt eben brauchen"). The alternative explanations are:
(a) other demographics - like students - can get the reduced fare
(b) there's some other high-profile ticket that costs 4,70 that the song is referencing or
(c) the price is made up.

*5
"extra" =means here= "to go out of your way to do something" OR "to do something for a specific purpose"
EXAMPLE SENTENCE

*6
IDIOM: "ich spring darauf an"
= I'll go with it
=literally= "I jump on it"

*7
unintentional rhyme in the translation = +10 poetic points BONUS: There's another, "rappyer" version of this song with an additional rap verse. I'm not sure which one is technically "the original version."
