About SeeDeutsch

SeeDeutsch is a blog dedicated to learning about the German language and GSC-culture**1 through contemporary music and other media.

The Audience

Speakers of English (and Arabic) that are curious about the German language and GSC-culture. My hope is that the blog will be accessible and entertaining for a wide range of language levels.

The Name

The name "SeeDeutsch" comes from the phrase "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?" which a native English speaker might write phonetically as "sprecken see doych?" I am amazed at how many non-German speakers know this phrase and even more amazed at how most of them know this phrase as their only German phrase **2.

In German, "SeeDeutsch" literally means "lake German." I think I'll use it as an excuse to create a nice lakefront visual theme for my blog once I get around to aesthetics.

Song Choice

I write blog entries about songs that I like. If you have a song request, just ask!

Design

I don't really feel like making this blog look nice. Yet.

*1 GSC stands for "German Speaking Countries." If I had written just "German Culture" that could sound like I wasn't including Austria, German-speaking Switzerland and any other German-speaking peoples that do not identify as German nationals. Excluding Austria would be especially rough because then I wouldn't be able to write posts about Christina Stürmer, my on/off crush.

*2 This is ironic because "Sprechen Sie Deutsch" means "Do you speak German?" This can be confusing. Think about it. If someone asked you if you speak German in German, wouldn't you assume it was because that someone also speaks German and wants to speak German with you? At any rate, I find this phrase's popularity among non-German speakers fascinating.
